The Department of Philosophy in F.A. Ahmed College, Garoimari was started with due permission from Gauhati University in the year 1996-97and the date of govt. concurrence is on 07-09-1999. Due to the lack of manpower, the Department formally started appointing Begum Runa Laila Mazumdar as lecturer in this department in 2000 and Dr Samir Ali joined in 2009. Post of both the faculties are sanctioned where Begum Runa Laila Mazumdar is acting HoD. The existing faculties have published several research articles, presented paper in both national and international seminars and have also engaged in the different activities of the College.

    Presently, the Department is offering Regular Course only in UG classes. From 2011 onwards, the course was converted into semester system and CBCS system was introduced in 2019 as per Gauhati University regulation. The department takes care of the students in more than one ways viz., by taking need based tutorial classes, lending books from the departmental library, giving previous years question papers and providing mentoring sessions etc.

    The passing rate of students of the department is satisfactory. The Department undertakes various activities like Educational Tour, Departmental Seminar, various kinds of literary competitions, awareness programme etc.

    Philosophy is a subject which is essential in every step of human life. The prime aim of the department is to impart philosophical knowledge to the youths of the different communities.

Students completing a B.A in Philosophy will be able to:

1. Communicate a clear understanding of historical and contemporary philosophical enquiry.
2. Demonstrate and ability to think independently about a philosophical topic or problems.
3. Clearly articulate and support their own views.
4. Critically analyze a philosophical argument concerning a particular topic or problem.
